In the presented series of articles, the most interesting of them will be described. The current, first article in the series, concentrates on recent advances in transmission-related mechanisms of the standard, which allow a Wi-Fi network to exceed 1 Gbit/s providing its user with a fast, general purpose network technology. At the same time, a parallel development trend results in specification of IEEE 802.11 transmission mechanisms dedicated for particular deployment scenarios, which will be addressed in the second article of the series. Such fast-growing capabilities and performance of the popular WLAN technology create a demand for additional functionality, related to coexistence, monitoring, management, security etc. This demand is currently being addressed by numerous IEEE 802.11 standard extensions and new wireless network architectures, which will be presented in the third and final article of the series.
