For the manufacturer teams the WRC is just a way to show their expertise in building cars and for the drivers to prove they are the best in the world. No prize money involved by the FIA or the individual organisers of events. The privateers pay their own drives either from their pocket or from sponsors, if they do well they might gain the trust of their sponsors to fund them for another year or attract some new ones to run a better car. The really good ones might get the attention of the official teams and could be offered a free drive in a factory car to see their potential. But nowadays this is very rare.
